You would never expect this coffee shop as you make your way toward town along Blowing Rock Road, and you might pass it without noticing if you aren’t looking for it.
Its unassuming presence adds to the charm of this local coffee destination and hangout near the Appalachian State campus. What makes people seek this place out? To owner Josiah Davis, Local Lion was started to create a meaningful space and product for people in the High Country.
“When you know what you’re working for, it’s easy to do more than you think you can do. When you’re building something for the people around you that you care about, that’s empowering.”

Josiah was born and raised in Watauga County and launched Local Lion to provide his hometown with a drive-thru coffeehouse. The name comes from a mountain lion that passed nearby as he and his family camped on Snake Mountain–an experience they’ve never forgotten.
